On his 58th birthday, Steve got an emotional surprise. Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson proclaimed January 17, 2015 as “Steve Harvey Day” and renamed a portion of E. 112th Street as “Steve Harvey Way!” Steve’s sisters and brother joined the mayor along with Steve’s buddies from the neighborhood, some of whom he hasn’t seen in over 20 years!

Steve Harvey is now a staple on television. If you think of a Christian entertainer, he is probably one of the first people to pop up in your head. Though he has gained fame and fortune in his most recent years, he has always stayed humble and connected to his roots.

Harvey was born in 1957 in West Virginia, but the family moved to Cleveland when he was young. He is known by his middle name, Stephen, instead of his first, Broderick (named for actor Broderick Crawford). Eloise and Jesse, a coal miner, welcomed him as the fifth of their five children. Unfortunately, Jesse died of black lung disease in 2000. After college and a series of jobs, he found standup comedy in 1985. From there, he career grew. There are few things he hasn’t done! Film, television, radio, stage – and most recently he’s had success as a talk-show and game-show host!

He grew up poor, but he had Jesus. Now that he also has success, he has not abandoned Jesus. Instead, he has lifted his name up even more.

His philosophy can, perhaps, be summed up in one of his quotes:

“God has given me a life far beyond anything I ever dreamed about. God is, man, God is something else man.”
